Sur State Historic Park, Andrew Molera, Pfeiffer Big Sur and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and Limekiln State Park have been closed until further notice.” Still posted on 30 August and still no reopening date. Read the rest of that page with care: it also gave the Timber Fire as 23,300 acres, the Plaskett as 2,700, and the Highway 1 closure as Post Mile 10.2 to 50.1, all three of them three days out of date. A stale page has not reopened anything, so the closure stands; its acreages do not.

Salmon Creek Falls Trail

There is no car park: people leave cars strung along both shoulders and walk in the road. It sits on a sharp bend where drivers cannot see them, so come round it slowly and expect people on foot. Do not park at the old ranger station — it is not a car park, and it is on the worst part of the corner.

Elephant Seal Vista Point

Northern elephant seals at Piedras Blancas, a few miles south of Ragged Point. Boardwalk out along the bluff, car park, free, open all year. The bulls are the enormous ones with the trunk-like snout — that is the walrus resemblance people remember, and it is how you tell them from sea lions. Protected: stay on the boardwalk and keep well back. Busiest for births in January and February.

Hearst Castle

The reason a great many people are on this road at all. You start at the visitor centre on Highway 1; the house itself is up the hill and reached only by the tour coach. Book ahead — tours sell out, and there is nothing to see if you simply turn up. Free to walk the visitor centre and look.

Sebastian's General Store

Still there, in old San Simeon village beside the castle entrance. Built in the 1850s and moved to this spot in 1878, it served the whalers and then the castle. Now a shop and a sandwich counter, with the Hearst Ranch winery alongside.

W. R. Hearst Memorial Beach, across the road from the castle entrance. A wooden pier, a sheltered cove, picnic tables, and boards about the old whaling and shipping village that stood here — this is where the material for the castle came ashore.

Two things to know about this list. Websites here have either been read off the operator's own site on the date shown, or come from OpenStreetMap — each entry says which, and nothing is guessed, because a wrong link on a page somebody plans a trip from is worse than a blank one. Entries marked local knowledge came from people on this coast rather than a database, and on this road they are usually the ones that are right: Gorda's chargers and Lucia's rebuild appear on no map we could find. Conditions here change faster than any of it. Ring ahead before you count on anything.
