Ventana Big Sur

Ventana Big Sur
Alila Ventana Big Sur, from its website — Ventana from the air
Highway 1 was open along this coast when it was last checked. Caltrans' own Lane Closure System, as verified 2026-10-06. Today’s road status.

On the mountain side of the road, in the redwoods below Post's hill, is Ventana, opened in 1975 as the coast's first grand hotel and now Alila Ventana Big Sur: rooms in the redwoods, Japanese baths, glamping tents up the canyon, and the Sur House, its restaurant and bar with a terrace over the Pacific. You do not have to stay to eat; the Sur House takes travelers who book ahead. And a note for the electric car, from my grandson: the coast's one fast charger is here at Ventana, Tesla's Supercharger, eight stalls in the resort, open around the clock since May of 2019, on Tesla's own plug.

It is the only fast charging between Carmel and Gorda, thirty miles south, where there is a charger by the store, and after Gorda there is nothing until the towns. Check the app before you count on any of it.

Told by Mabel Plaskett, whose column Coast Trails ran in the King City Rustler’s monthly supplement from 1959 to 1964, and who was in print as early as 1941 under the pen name Belinda Brown. Her family has been on this coast since 1869. Her writing.
